Bridal Bras 101: Tips On Finding The Perfect Bra For Your Wedding Day

Sharing is caring!

OK, so the guest list is set, you’ve found your dream dress, and you’re working on your vows. Now what? You’ll need some killer lingerie to wear underneath said dream dress, of course — after all, it’s what you wear underneath that can make it fit even better. The right bra is key for ensuring your wedding dress is as comfortable and as flattering as possible, but many brides end up overwhelmed by the options or confused as to which makes the most sense for their gown.

Finding a bridal bra that works with your dress as well as your bust line may come with some challenges, but these tips should help guide you in the right direction.

1.  Get fitted

Just because you got measured a year ago doesn’t mean you know your correct size. Your bra size can change for a variety of reasons, and you want to make sure it’s accurate before you invest in a bra for your big day. If the bra doesn’t fit well, your dress won’t either. So swing by your local department store or lingerie boutique to get some help from an expert fitter.

2.  Think function over fashion

We get it: You’re far more enticed by the sultry lace-colored undergarments with ornate detailing — and your wedding day is the time to feel your most beautiful, right? But the most important thing is that your bra is practical. You don’t want to be uncomfortable during your “I do’s” or constantly adjusting your bra at the reception, because it will certainly distract from your enjoying the moment. Save the special lingerie for your honeymoon (or to change into on your wedding night!) and go for bridal bras that meet the needs of your dress while suiting your breast size and shape.

3.  Consider sewn-in support

If your dress is backless or has a sheer bodice, you might want to have cups sewn into it rather than finding the right bra. This can also be an ideal way to go if you can’t find the right plunge bra for a gown that has a super low neckline. However, note that this option doesn’t always provide adequate support for full-busted ladies.

4.  Seek shaping from a longline bra

There are lots of reasons to love longline bras. With extra material under the bust that extends down your torso, they have a certain retro appeal. Meanwhile, particularly with some extra side boning, they offer shaping benefits, smoothing out and accentuating your waist. This makes them a fabulous choice for your wedding day. Did we mention that additional material also offers extra support for your breasts? That means less strain on your shoulders and back while you’re dancing the night away.

Another piece that can help in the shaping department is a bustier. With underwire and supportive cups, this bra substitute can lend incredible lift while sculpting your entire torso. If you’re seeking that coveted hourglass shape in your gown, it’s hard to beat this style. Plus, it’s a nice alternative to a strapless bra, especially for full-busted women seeking maximum support.

5.  Think adhesive

There’s no doubt about it: Slippage is your worst enemy when it comes to strapless bras. That’s why we recommend going with strapless styles that feature silicone tape. This anti-slip feature grips your skin, keeping the bra in place. Stick-on bras with adhesive cups can come in handy for backless dresses.

6.  Show it off

Who says you have to hide your bra? If you’re sporting a backless or sheer gown, consider choosing a bra with a statement back that is meant to be shown off.
Some gowns with particularly structured tops (such as a bustier bodice) may offer enough shaping and support on their own, allowing you to skip a bra altogether. Going braless on the big day all comes down to your own personal preferences and comfort level!

One final tip: If you plan to do your bridal lingerie shopping in person, you may want to call ahead and book an appointment with a fitter/stylist to ensure that you get some one-on-one attention. If you can’t bring in your gown to try on lingerie, it’s helpful to at least have some photos on hand to show staff.
